Having just checked out the brazilian english dubbed
version of FEARLESS DUO here be some vital-points of view without too many spoilers . It
has probably been a decade or so since I last caught this . As this version is soon to be
released on the shapevine it will be interesting to catch the varied feedback . As there
are many perspectives on what makes for a good kung fu film . And to think this rare gem
was with the boys from brazil all these years .
FEARLESS DUO

SCENARIO
Always in the market for a wager , Ah Sam sparks a fight with a female pot trader Lung Yan
, who also gets assistance from her elder sister , Lung Ching . He is given a concise
beating which serves to render his departure .
After a great training sequence where the girls are trying to elevate their combative
skills interchanging with long staff vs twin short sticks , it comes to light that these
two fiery sisters are on a revengeful kung fu mission to avenge the murder of their Dragon
family members by the notorious Ghost Leg Killer . This is captured in a flashback where
we witness Lung Ching’s husband getting soundly dusted in a militant eagle style
& fashion !
Worse for wear after his shameful defeat in the market , Ah Sam then triggers another
fight with a stone mason who has been angry for a whole month and must beat down somebody
just to vent his rage . An old kung fu master called Mo Meng passes by and saves the lad
from yet another beating . Ah Sam then persuades the master to teach him some kung fu .
After some foundational strength training Ah Sam is then introduced to the finer qualities
of traditional spearplay . When a burial site is accidently disturbed in training the old
master quickly pays some duty bound respects . For his courtesy a female ghost appears in
the night and gives out some spirited sex as a just reward , albeit a pipe dream . Not
fully comprehending his masters good fortune nookie , Ah Sam goes and smashes a random
burial urn with complete disregard . No fool escape for the boy this time as he is laid
out by the heroic figure of Cheng Fei , a rude awakening for true !
When the two fiery sisters are reunited with Master Mo Meng , who is their uncle , they
pool all their hopes on Ah Sam for a final showdown with the Ghost Leg Killer . Only
Dragon family members can learn their coveted styles of martial arts , so the elders marry
off Lung Yan to Ah Sum . His chauvinistic charm is not quite enough to consummate the
marriage he must beat the wife at kung fu first , not yet ready to draw upon the book of
bok . Even more reason to get down to some serious training ! After progressive tuition in
crane , dragon , tiger styles and then the advanced iron bridge boxing , Ah Sam then
aquires a flowing finesse with a feminine rendition of kung fu from the girls .
Amidst a kung fu demonstration , replete with northern lions , the Ghost Leg Killer turns
up with his men to kill off the remaining Dragon family descendants . Lackeys first battle
with the lady tigers as the weaponry is drawn and fired up shapes are bustin’ loose
from every quarter . This skirmish spills over to Master Mo Mengs house where the Ghost
Leg Killer lets fly with his deadly styles , supported by a killer walking prop , upon
which the fearless duo of Lung Yan and Ah Sum must combine their skills in formation to
take accent revenge ………
The Action
Lau Kar Yung is exceptional here and a great testament to his respective family
heritage . I especially liked the spearplay which demonstrated superb form and dynamic
power . While his demo’s of the empty hand styles were performed with masterful
posturing and high spirited , these scenes were more flourishes as opposed to being any
sort of lengthy displays of his true kung fu talents .
Hwang Jan Lee’s character is rather subdued in this film , he has a myriad of
mercenary sidekicks do most of his dastardly deeds . This is all a cunning build up to
when he sets about the opposition with his trademark death touches fused with militant
eagle maneuvers and a wicked walking prop to boot . Suited , booted and accessorized !
Gan Gar Fung gets many a scene to display her versatile array of kung fu
capabilities . She is a superb example of the old school opera trained generation and this
authoritative pedigree is proven here as she takes them all on with weaponry , flips &
kicks .
Yuen Chu really steals this show for me . She is another disciple from the
formidable Yu Jim Yuen academy . This cute opera sister is brilliant in all the action .
From her first stylish battle with Lau where she dishes out superior close quarter
combinations and then just turns away and opera struts her style . Then her incredible
manipulation of the double butterfly knives with flying flourishes and advanced groundwork
. For someone with such amazing skill / potential it is a definite pity that she did not (
AFAIK ) make many more films . Maybe some lucky son of a gwun proposed ?
Reaction
Boasting a combination of peking opera stars and real martial art masters , you would be
right on the lucky money in expecting no less than a super fly kung fu classic !
The Chinese title of this film is HUNG KUEN DAI SIH which loosely translates as the HUNG
BOXING MASTER this has a direct link to Lau’s character that would in essence be the
legendary Sam-The Iron Bridge . Aside from the off the wall pan-based humour which is
never too far away , there is plenty quality action to make this a worthy watch .
Director Joseph Kuo would later take much of the cast here to make the evergreen classic
DRAGON CLAWS , this was a much better and polished platform for the kung fu skills of Lau
Kar Wing . Hwang Jan Lee would get a lot more screen time in this movie too ! How can we
forget the fan favourite of Chan Lau who gets to play the green robed killer in both of
these films . Maybe FEARLESS DUO did not replicate the hong hwa scope of Kuo’s later
works , but , a winner for me all the same !
